Have a great summer, but don’t forget math! Here are some ways to help your child stay sharp in the next few months.
- Encourage your child to play games that use numbers and/or logic, such as Othello, Ken Ken, Sudoku, Monopoly, dominoes, or card games.
- Try out some online games and instructional videos (linked below).
- If your child wants an extra math challenge this summer, go to the Math Olympiad website and order a practice book of Math Olympiad problems. This extra math work is optional. (http://store.moems.org/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=MOEMS&Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=OLYMPIADBOOKS)
- We request that you review the following topics with your child in August.
- A student should be able to recall at least 54 multiplication facts in TWO AND A HALF minutes (i.e., 90% or better on the Mad Minute Quiz). Please work with your child to achieve this goal. To quickly achieve this score, we recommend practicing math facts 10-15 minutes per day. Practice quizzes are available at: http://www.math-drills.com/multiop/mixed_operations_md_vertical_100_0112_0112_001.html
- Multiplication problems with 3 and 4 digit numbers multiplied by two-digit numbers. (Ex. 2,347 x 43 or 709 x 68)
- Long division problems with one-digit divisors. (Ex. 346 divided by 8 or 21,504 divided by 3)
